Research Associate in Galaxy Formation

Cardiff University - School of Physics & Astronomy

Location: Cardiff
Salary: £40,247 to £45,163 per annum (Grade 6).
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 2nd December 2024
Closes: 3rd January 2025
Job Ref: 19419BR

The Royal Society-funded project “The physics of the gaseous haloes around galaxies” led by Dr. Freeke van de Voort at Cardiff University is seeking applications to fill the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate.

The research associate will work within the Simulating the Universe with Refined Galaxy Environments (SURGE) project, a suite of cosmological zoom-in simulations with enhanced resolution using the moving mesh code Arepo. The aim is to extend this project by focusing on the interface between galaxy discs and the circumgalactic medium, which is poorly resolved in current simulations. We are seeking candidates with experience in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation and the circumgalactic medium of star-forming disc galaxies and with a strong background in numerical methods and code development.

The successful applicant will be part of the active and diverse Cardiff Hub for Astrophysics Research and Technology (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/physics-astronomy/research/research-groups/chart). Other department members play leading roles in extragalactic astronomy, star formation, cosmology, gravitational waves, supernovae, planets, cosmic dust, and building the next generation of ground- and space-based telescopes.

The post is full-time and fixed term for 2.5 years or until 31 December 2027, with a flexible start date.

Salary: £40,247 - £45,163 per annum (Grade 6). It is not anticipated that an appointment be made above £40,247 per annum, point 6.32.
