Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the Role

We are seeking a researcher for a study funded by the NIHR looking at trial to see whether low dose computed tomography (CT) should be used as a first line test for symptoms that may suggest lung cancer to reduce diagnostic delay and improve outcomes (MEDLEY). You will have responsibility for engaging with the rest of trial team and leading the qualitative data collection and analysis about patient and clinician acceptability. Based at our Charterhouse Square campus, you will be travelling to trial sites, contacting patients and clinicians to arrange interviews and helping to organise a stakeholder event. You will also have opportunities to contribute your own ideas to future grant applications. The project is a collaboration with the Universities of Leeds, Warwick, Exeter and Manchester.

About You

Applicants should have experience of conducting research in healthcare, with an understanding of inequalities in access to healthcare research, and be motivated by healthcare improvement. An excellent communicator, you may have some experience of working within a trial and/or diagnostic testing for cancer, as this is the focus of our project. Significant research experience of high-quality qualitative research methods, including interviews, is essential, alongside a demonstrable knowledge of research ethics procedures.

About the Institute and Centre

The Wolfson Institute of Population Health (WIPH) is an exciting and dynamic environment, home to more than 450 staff, 100 PhD students and c500 postgraduate taught students.  It harnesses expertise across a wide range of population-based research and education activities and aims to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence in population health, primary care and preventive medicine. The Institute is organised into six separate research centres which, though complementary and following the Institute strategic plan, also have Centre-specific objectives and requirements.

The Centre for Cancer Screening, Prevention and Early Diagnosis forms part of the WIPH and brings together globally leading researchers focusing on cancer prevention, cancer screening and detection and early diagnosis across two units. CCSPED also hosts the cross-cutting Cancer Behavioral Science group and the CRUK-funded Cancer Prevention Trials Unit.
