Job Summary

The post holder will be responsible for development and implementation of pre-sessional and transition support for students from widening participation backgrounds as part of the university’s commitments in its Access and Participation Plan (APP).  This will include project management of a residential programme for students at the pre-enrolment stage to support transition into the university and development of resources and provision to support widening participation students in preparation for and during their time at the university. These activities will also include developing resources and support provision for members of staff from across the University who engage with students from widening participation backgrounds, for example, personal tutors. 

This position requires excellent organisational skills, with the ability to plan and prioritise a busy workload effectively in order to meet given objectives, adjusting priorities as necessary in response to changing circumstances or problems and demonstrating a flexible approach.  Working independently, they will be expected to resolve the majority of issues and may only report progress and results.

The post holder will be expected to develop positive working relationships with a broad range of individuals and work effectively across teams and will need strong written and oral communication skills. They will be expected to have experience of working in higher education, with an interest in social mobility, learning, teaching and the student experience and will, ideally, have experience of working in a project support role.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will provide project administration including maintenance of project documentation, organisation of meetings, taking notes and monitoring follow-up actions.
  • You will be managing the implementation of communication plans for internal and external audiences, ensuring effective communication of strategy implementation and working collaboratively with colleagues.
  • You will be monitoring expenditure against budgets, producing regular reports of spend against budgets, raising purchase orders and administering expenses.
  • You will be organising and supporting meetings and events, booking rooms, preparing committee papers (including regular project and programme reports), taking minutes, completing and monitoring follow-up actions.
  • You will be required to manage casual student staff who support delivery of residentials.

Essential requirements

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
  • Experience of working within higher education, with a sound knowledge and understanding of the student experience and the academic environment.
  • Experience of dealing with finances and budgets with evidence of successful experience of administering budgets and related processes.
  • Ability to work independently and manage own workload to tight deadlines with little direct supervision.
  • Able to adopt a flexible approach by adapting to the changing needs of the role and the needs of the team.
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively.
  • Numerate with the proven ability to understand, interpret and explain complicated information and data (including financial data).
  • Understanding of the widening access and participation agenda within Higher Education.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain good working relationships with a wide range of people at all levels of seniority.
  • Ability to work flexibly as part of a team, readily supporting colleagues in times of high pressure.
  • Excellent IT skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
