The City Law School is offering 1 full-time, three-year doctoral scholarships (entry in September 2025) specifically addressed to Black British applicants.

Applications are invited from exceptional and ambitious graduates wishing to pursue cutting-edge research in any of the school’s key research areas.

What is Offered

A doctoral scholarship will provide:

  • An annual bursary (currently £21, 237 subject to change in line with Research Councils UK’s recommendation on the national minimum stipend)
  • Full tuition fee waiver.
  • Research expenses (up to £1000 over three years) to support research needs such as specialist training, equipment, or conference attendance.

Who is Eligible

Applications are sought from UK-permanent residents (UK fee-paying students) from the following ethnic group: Black (Black or Black British African, Black or Black British Caribbean, Black or Black British other or Mixed Black or Black British).

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and the potential to produce cutting edge-research. Applicants should have a track record of high academic achievement, demonstrated by an LLB degree with at least a second class (upper division) or equivalent, and normally a Master's degree (in law or a related discipline) with at least a merit or equivalent. Applicants should demonstrate a suitable aptitude to undertake a course of independent research.
