PhD Studentship within the Centre for Applied Vision Research

One funded PhD studentship is available within the Centre for Applied Vision Research within the School of Health and Psychological Sciences, City St George’s, University of London.

PhD project 

Accommodative dysfunction can lead to symptoms such as eye fatigue, blurred vision, double vision and headaches, particularly during near work, which may be further aggravated by prolonged use of digital devices. Electronic devices like smartphones, eBooks, and computers are integral to young people’s life, used for school, gaming, social networking, reading, and watching movies. Consequently, their eyes are exposed for extended periods often at closer distances. Several interventions are available to alleviate the symptoms of digital eye strain. The aim of this project is to investigate the relative effectiveness of these strategies to inform best practice for eye care providers. Funding 

Students will receive a maintenance grant that is aligned with the UKRI rate (including London weighting), currently £21,237 per annum, and home tuition fees. Overseas students who are successful will have to meet the difference between the home fee, included in the funding, and the overseas fee. 

General requirements 

The studentship will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and potential to produce cutting edge-research. 

Applicants should have: 

• a bachelor's degree with a good classification in either Optometry or Orthoptics
• Experience in research or working towards a postgraduate qualification is ideal
• an IELTS score of at least 7 (with a minimum of 7.0 in writing) if your first language is not English.
