Background

The School of Technology offers a wide range of courses at bachelors and masters level, with its research being organised in Research Centres across three departments.

Technical staff in the School of Technology work in teams or individually, supporting core teaching and research in Electrical, Electronic, Biomedical, Aeronautical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering

As a member of the school’s technical team, the post holder is expected to adopt a flexible and co-operative approach, to ensure best practice and a commitment to provide high quality services to both students and staff and external visitors to the university. You will work with a highly talented and motivated team and there will be substantial opportunities to gain new experience.

Responsibilities

We are looking for an individual to help provide technical engineering support, predominantly mechanical/manufacture with emphasis on the ability to weld, to support teaching and research activity in the first instance within the Project Technical Centre which is part of the Department of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, although the successful candidate may also be called upon to support the wider work of the School where appropriate.

The primary role of this position is to support the manufacture of a race car for the Formula Student Project which is a key aspect of the project work undertaken by our undergraduate students.

To support this requirement, we need an individual who is enthusiastic, organised and flexible.

Person Specification

The candidate should be at least qualified to ONC/HNC level or equivalent with a demonstrable mechanical / manufacturing background. An ability to weld both ferrous and nonferrous materials using MIG and TIG processes is also highly desirable. Additionally, the successful candidate will have undertaken a recognised apprenticeship or equivalent in a relevant area.

Strong organisational skills will be essential with an interest in motor sport also being desirable.
