Background

City St George’s, University of London (City) and Tape Specialities Ltd (TSL) are recruiting for a candidate to complete the last 14 months of a project that is developing an innovative diabetes diagnostic technology called SmartCare. Working within the company in Tring, Hertfordshire, and the University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, the candidate will apply their academic and industrial knowledge to this commercial project.

TSL is an expert high-volume manufacturer in the medical diagnostic industry, providing components to some of the largest vendors of home-use glucose test-strips (c3 billion units/year). The company has a deep understanding of polymer films, adhesives and conversion processes and how to use them to create unique and innovate products.

Responsibilities

The candidate will drive this KTP partnership, working with academic and company partners to ensure key objectives are met. The Associate will design and optimise diagnostic sensors for measuring haematocrit (HCT) and HbA1c levels and deploy the sensor system on an industry-standard single-use test-strip measuring blood glucose (BG) and HbA1c.

Additionally, the Associate will design, develop and build an electronics system to run test strips, test and optimize this system, whilst analysing emergent data and producing schematics for a handheld device.

Person Specification

We are looking for a candidate with a BSc, MSc or other Higher Degree in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering or Electronic Engineering. Experience of delivering or contributing to complex research programmes is desired. The candidate will have experience in FEM simulations and/or experimental experience involving the use of instrumentation on biological samples or biomimetic phantoms.

The ideal candidate will have experience of designing, developing and testing mixed-signal (analogue and digital) circuits and experience in microfluidics and working in biology labs.
