De Montfort University is an ambitious, globally minded institution with a clear focus on delivering high-quality teaching and research. A culturally rich university with a strong commitment to the public good, it strives to maintain a stimulating, innovative and inclusive environment where staff and students can thrive.
Faculty / Directorate
DMU is proud to have one of the most diverse staff and student populations in the UK, and we are committed to supporting everyone in reaching their full potential in an environment where differences are accepted, valued, celebrated, and supported. As the first UK institution to receive a Silver Award for the Race Equality Charter (REC), we have also earned 2nd place in the 2024 Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, ranked among the top 100 LGBTQ+ employers. In addition, we have renewed our Bronze level Athena Swan award and continue to strive for the top ‘Leader’ level in the Disability Confident Charter. Our students are among our greatest assets, with more than half identifying as Black, Asian, or from other ethnically minoritised backgrounds, and we support one of the largest disabled student populations in the UK. Through our award-winning universal design for learning and comprehensive student welfare provision, we empower all students to reach their full potential.
Role
De Montfort University is seeking an EDI Charters and Awards Lead to drive the university’s commitment to advancing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. This pivotal role focuses on managing and coordinating both internal and external EDI charters and awards, including the Race Equality and Athena Swan Charters. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that EDI actions, processes, and practices are embedded throughout the university in alignment with DMU’s strategy.
In this role, you will collaborate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to foster inclusive and equitable initiatives. You will lead the application, reporting, and delivery of EDI projects, providing expert guidance to various departments and working groups.
Additional responsibilities include supporting the development and implementation of EDI action plans, managing compliance with relevant legislation such as the Equality Act 2010, and contributing to the university’s overarching EDI objectives. Working closely with the EDI team, you will play a critical part in advancing DMU’s aspiration to become a leading institution for EDI in higher education.
Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing EDI Charters and Awards, providing comprehensive support for EDI committees and governance frameworks, and collaborating with various teams, including the Education Academy and the Stephen Lawrence Research Centre, to develop strategies that reduce awarding gaps. They will also develop policies and implement equality impact assessments while offering tailored advice and guidance to stakeholders across the university. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent organisational skills, possess the ability to prioritise effectively, and maintain a flexible approach to work. A commitment to being on campus for at least three days per week is essential, as this role requires a collaborative team player who is passionate about advancing EDI goals at DMU.
