The research assistant is funded by a 5-year Lister Fellowship and a 4-year UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, both led by Dr. Fiona Whelan in collaboration with researchers at the University of Nottingham, McMaster University, the University of Calgary, and Queen’s University Belfast.

Overall, the project is aimed at understanding the impact of microbe-pathogen interactions on the health of individuals with cystic fibrosis.

This project will involve the microbial culture of sputum samples collected from individuals with cystic fibrosis by our clinical collaborators at Wythenshawe hospital in Manchester. The post holder will work with other members of the team to grow, isolate, characterize, and archive strains from these samples for long-term storage of this valuable strain collection. The research assistant will be responsible for high throughput phenotyping and in vitro competition experiments of collected isolates and in preparing the DNA of strains-of-interest for genome sequencing. The post holder will be organized, responsible, and work integratively with other members of the Whelan lab and MERMan group.

The post holder will support a wide range of research activities in the field of microbiology and molecular biology and be responsible for the general laboratory facilities, including performing experiments, contributing to experimental design, consultation with other researchers, data analysis, presentation/reporting, contributing to a safe laboratory environment, and advising/supervising others in the research group.
