About the role

The College of Science and Engineering is home to the academic schools of: Chemistry, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Engineering, Geology & Geography, and Physics & Astronomy. Teaching and research activity in these schools are supported by College Technicians covering a range of specialist areas. One such area is manufacturing of unique devices and prototypes, and leading the education of students in manufacturing techniques and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles.

The role requires the full delivery of technical skills training/teaching of undergraduate students to carry out rapid prototyping, turning and milling operations, bench skills and fitting techniques. You will also support undergraduate and postgraduate project manufacture within the School of Engineering, to include extra-curricular activities, such as Formula Student and students entering external prototyping competitions. Other responsibilities also include: supervising the Engineering Manufacture Workshop for task allocation; managing workflow; providing advice and guidance; best practice procedures; and ensuring manufacture request deadlines are met.

You will be able to lead students in the School of Engineering in the design and manufacture of unique devices, to include repair, modification and construction of new and existing equipment and components, alongside the provision of specialist technical expertise. You will be able to collaborate with academic staff to design and develop technical skills training and manufacturing activities.

About you

You will have demonstrable experience and knowledge of operating conventional and CNC engineering manufacture equipment, including vertical milling and horizontal turning operations. You will be required to use a full range of mechanical workshop skills for the manufacture of research equipment and components, and provide instruction in how to do so.
