The Role

As an experienced researcher, we’re looking for you to make a significant contribution to the ‘Crime and Criminal Justice as Social Determinants of Health in Scotland’ project. The project aims to identify actions to reduce the negative impacts of justice on health and increase opportunities to improve health and wellbeing in Scotland’s disadvantaged communities.

You’ll work directly alongside health practitioners and prisoners in the community and be responsible for undertaking qualitative fieldwork (interviews and focus groups) in and around prisons in Scotland. You will analyse data gathered and disseminate results.

You’ll be responsible for managing various aspects of the project, including ethical approval, liaison with partners, contributing to/developing proposals to secure future research funding and organising events.

You’ll get expand your research network, collaborating with experienced researchers in the wider project team (Strathclyde, Glasgow, and Edinburgh Napier) and contribute to conference presentations and joint publications.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced researcher looking to develop their career. Throughout the role, you will be provided with mentoring, training, and development opportunities.

Please note: this role offers hybrid working where you will be expected to work both on site at our Sighthill Campus in Edinburgh and remotely. Travel (within Scotland) will also be expected for fieldwork, project meetings, events, and conferences.

Who we’re looking for

Essential

  • PhD in Criminology or cognate social science discipline
  • Research experience specifically in qualitative methods (including interviews and focus groups) and presenting this data
  • Experience of gaining ethical approval and managing projects through to completion
  • Experience writing-up and disseminating findings in an accessible manner
  • The ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing with a wide range of individuals
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to develop and maintain effective external and internal relationships
  • Organised, with an ability to work effectively and plan work on a day-to-day, week-to-week, and month-to-month basis

Desirable

  • Experience of working in policing or technology-related academic contexts
  • A track record of publishing in high quality journals
  • Experience of using qualitative data analysis software
  • Experience in the use of quantitative methods and analysis
