Background

To assist in research (by carrying out data collection or analyses) to create knowledge through providing research support for projects and research groups.

The Department of Economics wishes to make an appointment for the position of the lab manager of the Birmingham Experimental Economics Laboratory and invites applications from suitably qualified candidates. Candidates with interests in any area of economics are encouraged to apply.

The post holder will be based in the Department of Economics which is part of the Birmingham Business School and has recently established its own laboratory specifically designed for the conduct of economics experiments. The Birmingham Experimental Economics Laboratory (BEEL) is a new initiative by the University of Birmingham which aims to build on considerable existing strengths in behavioural and experimental methods across several Schools – in particular, the Business School, the School of Psychology and the School of Computer Science.

Main Duties

  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
  • Analyse research data as directed
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
  • Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture
  • Support the conduct of experimental sessions and perform checks on equipment ensuring that it is fully operational prior to the sessions taking place
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies e.g. for funding
  • Research and introduce new technologies and methodologies to advance experimental and behavioural research
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline

Person Specification

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant subject area 
  • Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques
  • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
