Location: Aberdeen
Salary: £37,099 to £44,263 negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 16th July 2024
Closes: 11th August 2024
Job Ref: PSY064A

Research within the School of Psychology is structured around three highly collaborative themes: Cognition; Perception & Attention; and Social Cognition, with several special interest groups both within and across themes. We also have an applied psychology strand, focusing on the impact of our research on society, health, and industry. Across all these themes we strongly support interdisciplinary research in an international context.

The School houses state-of-the-art facilities to support world-leading research across the three research themes, including extensive eye tracking facilities (both lab-based and mobile), EEG systems, psychophysics laboratories and motion tracking facilities, as well as a large number of well-equipped behavioural testing laboratories. We house high-performance computing for analysing brain imaging and face-processing data and have access to the University Maxwell High Performance Computing Service. We also have long-standing collaborative links with a range of stakeholders (such as NHS patients, healthy older adults, schools, industrial stakeholders) to facilitate a wide range of research in psychology.

As a member of the Technical Team you will primarily support research students using specialist laboratories. These include UG, PGT and PGR students that wish to develop codes to conduct behavioural, or psychophysiological investigations.  Although you are not required to develop experimental paradigms, you will assist with trouble shooting, data analysis and interpretation of the findings as well as maintenance of the laboratory equipment.

The successful candidate should be flexible and highly motivated with excellent communication skills as the role will require regular contact with team members, academic staff, and visitors.  You should have a PhD in Experimental Psychology and experience of supervising students. You should have extensive experience of working in a modern laboratory environment and a good working knowledge of IT systems, programming and statistical analysis. You will be a key member of the School’s Technical Management Team and work closely with the Director of Research in the School of Psychology.

The purpose of this post is to provide a period of maternity cover for up to twelve months.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 scale, £37,099 - £44,263 and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Doug Martin, Head of School (Doug.martin@abdn.ac.uk).

In accordance with the UKVI immigration rules, it is with regret that this role DOES NOT MEET THE SALARY REQUIREMENTS for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route.  For this role, the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK prior to commencing employment and obtain the right to work in the UK.  Information on other visa options is available at https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa.
