Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 12th July 2024
Closes: 29th July 2024
Job Ref: SUP179A

The Higher Education Sector has seen rapid development, and increase, in the demand for student support linked to complex support needs – including cases involving deteriorating Mental Health, the impact of Gender Based Violence and Sexual Harassment (GBV) and other significant personal issues. As a result, there has been a noticeable increase in institutional responsibilities and raised student expectations. The University of Aberdeen Student Advice & Support team is seeking to recruit a new Student Support Adviser to ensure that students are supported with a range of individual requirements. This will involve working closely with individual students, as well as with a range of University colleagues.

The successful applicant, working with other staff across the University and beyond, will provide a range of information, advice and support to students and applicants on a wide range of matters (including personal, physical and mental health, GBV, accommodation and financial concerns) as a key member of our frontline team.

The postholder will have an important role in supporting students with complex needs and in supporting short term situations involving “individuals in crisis” and the resulting longer-term needs flowing from these situations. This will include assessing risk under the processes linked to students of concern, and support for casework under the Support for Study Policy.

Student Support Advisers also have an important role in supporting student with disabilities. This includes understanding individual’s needs, learning differences and medical conditions as well as assisting in the setup of lecture and examination provisions for students. The role will also include considering applications for funds for financial assistance and may, depending on the successful candidate, look at additional specialisation on the range of pressing issues facing students.

The role will also include supporting the development and enhancement of processes and policy linked to student support. The post will include oversight of project work and standard operating processes linked to specific areas of work within the team, e.g. relating to Gender-Based Violence, Money Matters, Disability support, etc. Specific areas of oversight and responsibility to be discussed with the successful candidate and distributed in line with student need and service demand.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6, £37,099 - £44,263 per annum, pro rata and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries should be made to Jemma Murdoch, Deputy Head of Student Support Services

(j.murdoch@abdn.ac.uk).

In accordance with the UKVI immigration rules, it is with regret that this role DOES NOT MEET THE SALARY REQUIREMENTS for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route.  For this role, the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK prior to commencing employment and obtain the right to work in the UK.  Information on other visa options is available at www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa.
