Location: Cambridge
Salary: £32,332 to £38,205
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 15th July 2024

Job Ref: VY42334

Cambridge University Libraries wishes to appoint an Assistant Librarian to support the delivery of outstanding library services in support of the teaching, learning and research activity of the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL). The Assistant Librarian will be based at the MMLL Library in the Raised Faculty Building on the Sidgwick Site. The MMLL Library has a specialist collection of around 120,000 books and 5,000 films, covering the ten modern languages taught by the Faculty, as well as Linguistics.

Responsible for the management of day-to-day services within the MMLL Library, you will lead on the provision of an exceptional, effective and inclusive user experience for all library users, playing a key role in the provision of teaching, learning and research support, particularly around induction, and in the evaluation and assessment of library services. You will organise, train and support postgraduate student invigilators who work in the evenings and Saturdays during term-time, and will be responsible for line management of the team's Library Assistant.

As Assistant Librarian, you will collaborate with and work closely with academic colleagues both in the German Section, and the Centre of Film and Screen, investing time in cultivating excellent relationships with members of the Faculty. You will lead on collection development in German and in Film, managing reading lists for undergraduate and MPhil taught courses, and will acquire, classify and catalogue material in those subject areas and in a wide range of formats.

With experience of working in a library, and of providing exceptional customer service, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an ability to build productive relationships with a wide range of people. The ability to understand one (or more) of the languages taught by the Faculty is essential; please state on your application your experience in this area. A working knowledge of German is desirable, but not necessary.

Reporting to the MMLL Librarian, you will join a friendly, inclusive and passionate small local team, as well as a supportive team of library staff from across the School of Arts & Humanities Libraries network. You will have the opportunity to participate in wider professional projects taking place within Cambridge University Libraries.
