Applications are invited for a temporary full time Research Project Support Officer working in the School of Ocean Sciences on a project to better understand bycatch of protected, threatened and endangered species in Welsh fisheries.
Duties will include planning and conducting field-based data collection through an onboard observer program in Welsh static net fisheries, quantitative data analysis (e.g. catch/bycatch data, VMS/fishing effort data), and liaising with external and internal partners. The role will be supported by a research assistant and a post-doctoral researcher.
Candidates should be educated to degree standard (or equivalent) in a marine biology related field and have undertaken STCW 95 personal survival at Sea training (or equivalent) or be able to complete this training on taking up the role. They will have previous experience of boat-based data collection. The successful candidate will be required to work at sea on small and large vessels. A UK driving licence is essential to enable access to remote sites at specified times.
The successful candidate will be expected to commence 1st September 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter and the post is available until 31st March 2025.
This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.
