There is an exciting opportunity to work within a collaborative EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) “Real-time Digital Twin Assisted Surgery” project, funded under the UKRI’s Transformative Healthcare Technologies 2.0 theme, involving the Universities of Cambridge, Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Imperial College London, along with leading industrial partners.

We are seeking a biomedical engineer to join the project on a full-time basis to lead and work on the Strathclyde elements of the project. This will develop physical organ models using 3D bioprinting technologies, formulating bioinks for producing mechanically realistic organ models (e.g. kidney and brain tumour models), and, working very closely as part of an integrated team with other academics and researchers, and assisting in the supervision of PhD students at Strathclyde and at the other university and industry partners.

Candidates will be expected to have expertise and track record in some or all of the areas listed below:
1. Research experience in 3D bioprinting
2. Relevant experience in bioink formulation
3. Strong experience in tissue mechanics is desirable.

You will have an ability to plan and organise research programmes, to ensure successful completion and you will have experience of planning and organising workloads, including the ability to supervise and delegate work. You will have an ability to work within a team environment and to lead teams and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

As a Biomedical Engineering Research Associate in the field of organ printing development, the RA will be a vital member of a research team dedicated to innovating and advancing the technology of DTAS. Your role will involve assisting in the design, testing, and analysis of 3D printed organs with a focus on fine-tuning their mechanical properties, and integration with digital twin technology.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline, or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree. You will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in 3D bioprinting and biomaterials, and a developing ability to conduct individual research work, to disseminate results and to prepare research proposals. You will have an ability to plan and organise your own workload effectively and an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: relevant work experience, membership of relevant Chartered/professional bodies (including the Higher Education Academy), experience of relevant student supervision and teaching activities, and/or experience of knowledge exchange related activities.
