About us

The Research Department of Neurodegenerative Disease, incorporating the Dementia Research Centre and Huntington’s Disease Centre, is recognised as internationally leading in the study of neurodegenerative diseases causing dementia and related disorders. The Department has a strong focus on mechanistic dissection of genetic, molecular cellular and neuropathological processes which underlie neurodegeneration in particular diseases and across the neurodegeneration spectrum. The Department has strong collaborative links with the UK Dementia Research Institute (DRI) at UCL.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to work on an important project on neurodegeneration with co-investigators Professors Mina Ryten and Henry Houlden. We anticipate major discovery and publications from this work.

You will join a team carrying out next generation short-read and long-read sequencing, predominantly of samples from patients with dementia, and work alongside the technical team at UK DRI at UCL.

As well as short and long-read genomic and transcriptomic data analysis, there will be clinical and neuropathology correlation with a large number of patient donated brain samples with neurodegenerative disorders. Working as part of the sequence analysis team, you will investigate short and long-read clinical data and the clinical and pathological characterisation.

The role is available from 01 September 2024 and funded by the Fidelity Bermuda Foundation for two years in the first instance.

About you

You will hold a PhD in biology or genetics, or cognate subject, or an MBBS/MD, or equivalent degree. There will be the opportunity for candidates with a clinical background to study a PhD.

You will have a background in genetic and bioinformatic analysis with particular focus on short and long-read sequencing, and in clinical and/or pathological analysis and correlation with genomic or transcriptomic data. Experience with database management is essential. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and IT proficiency at advanced user level are also required.

This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa.
