About the role

Achieving equality, diversity and inclusion is fundamental to the success of the University of Sussex. We aspire not just to reduce inequalities in outcomes for individuals, but to use our expertise, commitment and courage to challenge the status quo. We take bold action to transform the campus into one that is experienced as inclusive by all our communities.

We are looking for a Project Manager for our Black at Sussex project, a five-year funded programme to improve the recruitment and retention of Black Students to the university and to improve the experience of Black Staff and Students working and studying here.

The Project Manager will support implementation and delivery of the project objectives by planning and implementing activities agreed by the Steering Group, engaging stakeholders and partners, evaluating implementation and progress and maintaining oversight of the project budget.

The Black at Sussex Project Manager post is the only funded post on the project. As such, they have a critical role in initiating and developing successful partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders - predominantly black colleagues and black-led organisations - to take forward meaningful work that has a lasting impact and advances the aims of the programme. To have credibility in this engagement it is the view of the Black at Sussex Steering Group that they need to be a person of colour.

About you

You should be an effective project manager with a career history showing progression within the project management profession within a complex and challenging environment. You’ll need excellent organisational abilities, an analytical approach and have excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build relationships for effective work with a range of stakeholders. You should be equally comfortable working collaboratively or autonomously. Knowledge of equality issues, relevant legislation and good practice will underpin your ability to deliver on this project.

Due to the specific nature of this post and the need to develop trust with the different internal and external Black communities and stakeholders the project engages with, applications are restricted to those who consider themselves to be a person of colour in line with the requirements of a genuine occupational qualification.

The flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to attend University events is desirable.
