This is a fixed term appointment for 24 months, with planned start date no later than December 2024, with extension subject to further funding.

As part of its work with the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action and other decision-makers, the GRI is supporting a major new global effort to support finance ministries in improving economic analysis to drive climate leadership.

This new post will play a leading role in a major new global programme of work, co-chaired by the United States Department of the Treasury and the Danish Ministry of Finance, to support finance ministries and other economic decision-makers in improving economic analysis and modelling to drive climate action. This post will be within the Stern team on international climate action and finance at GRI.

The post will lead in building a global ‘community of practice’ on the economics of climate action for Finance Ministries, economic decision-makers and the research community. The post holder will lead major policy-oriented research reports for COP29, COP30 and beyond on ways to improve economic analysis for climate action. They will play a leading role in designing and organising an annual Forum on the Macroeconomics of Green and Resilient Transitions and supporting a new Green Macro Modelling Initiative led by the Bezos Earth Fund, as well as complementing wider activities to support the role of finance ministries.

They will build and maintain a strong network of relationships and community of practice among finance and economic policy ministries, international financial institutions, and academic organisations. They will participate, in country visits to finance ministries in other countries and will help to lead on the application for financial support for programmes and projects.

Candidates will have a Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, development economics, climate policy or closely-related field. They will have extensive experience working with senior decision-makers in finance ministries and/or economic ministries, or within international financial institutions, in low to high-income countries. They will have a proven track record of publishing, including as lead author, high-quality analysis on the economics of climate action and / or financing for climate action in a policy context. They will have extensive experience in planning and managing international programmes or projects and an ability to work effectively with ministers and senior officials. They should have experience of using and leading quantitative economic analysis and modelling for climate action.
