The Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST) seeks a Research Associate to join a project examining transnational repression. Based in the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion and the Security Lancaster Institute, you will undertake research to inform the development of a conceptual model of how states use soft and hard power to influence their citizens abroad. How we might reliably measure this phenomenon is also of interest. The post is available immediately and is for a duration of 12 months.

You will be involved in all aspects of the research, with responsibility for research synthesis, data collection and analysis, and contributing to journal publications and presentations. You will join a vibrant group of academic, postdoctoral and PhD researchers engaged in studies of human interaction and security at Lancaster University (e.g., with the Security Lancaster Institute), and more broadly within the CREST community. If desired, there will be an opportunity during the project for you to apply for further research funding.

You should be a self-motivated and ambitious researcher with a PhD in International Relations or cognate discipline. You will have a good working knowledge of the field of international security and/or homeland security.

The Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST) is an interdisciplinary research centre that is at the forefront of the UK’s efforts to understand, mitigate and counter contemporary security threats. Coordinated by Lancaster University and involving over 35 universities in the UK and overseas, the Centre conducts world-class research, stimulates public and professional debate, connects disciplinary communities, informs policy and practice, and provides training to research leaders of the future.

Security Lancaster is one of the largest interdisciplinary security research institutes in the UK with 120 staff from 15 academic departments. It is home to Lancaster University’s Cyber Security Research Centre (CSRC), CREST, and the EPSRC Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Node in Security (TAS-S). As a University Institute, Security Lancaster draws on excellence from across the university to deliver world class research and education that challenges the way individuals, organisations, and societies secure and protect themselves.

The Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion (PPR) is a vibrant and diverse department based in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. PPR was formed in 2010 by merging three subjects – Politics and International Relations, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. It’s the only department of its kind in the UK, and a great place to study and research.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be addressed to Professor Basil Germond, Co-Director of Security Lancaster (b.germond@lancaster.ac.uk) or Professor Stacey Conchie, Director of CREST (s.conchie@lancaster.ac.uk).
