A senior post-PhD ERC research fellow with training in political and social science is being recruited to join an ERC-funded project at UCD’s School of Politics and international Relations: Democracy Challenged.  You will be tasked with supporting the quantitative and experimental survey aspects of the project. You will work directly with the Principal Investigator/research team on the work package that analyses the relationship between the media, democracy and inequality. More specifically, you will support the PI in implementing cross-national survey experiments on public opinion, democracy and inequality in the USA, UK, France and Germany.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive political and social science literature review on the relationship between the media, inequality and democracy.
  • Develop and support the PI in implementing a cross-national survey experiment on the role of the media in framing and contesting the politics of inequality in the USA, UK, France and Germany.
  • Develop and support the PI in implementing a list-survey experiment among tax lawyers, legal-accountants and business-finance elites.
  • Carry out administrative work associated with the research programme.
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which you are engaged as directed by and with the support of the PI.
  • Mentor and assist, as appropriate and as directed, the research graduate students in your group.
  • Engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of your research group.

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory:

  • PhD submitted at time of appointment in relevant political and social science subject area.    
  • Strong quantitative research skills.
  • Experience with social science survey research.
  • Evidence of strong research activity and scholarly output.
  • Strong commitment to publishing high-level academic/scientific research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational/administrative skills, including an ability to work to deadlines.
  • Strong commitment and willingness to work within an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Awareness of UCD’s equality, diversity and inclusion agenda.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Skills/experience in survey experiments.
  • Skills/experience of surveying elites.
  • Skills/experience in computational/quantitative text analysis methods, or a commitment to learning these.
  • Fluent in German and/or French.
  • Some background or familiarity with the political economy research on democracy and economic inequality.
  • Some background or familiarity with the political economy research on multinational corporate tax avoidance.
  • Some background or familiarity with the political science research on political communication and media framing.
