Transitional Assistant Professor in Responsible Artificial Intelligence
We are looking for a Transitional Assistant Professor to lead innovative research in the area of Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) and to teach in the School of Computer Science. This post is focused on research within the Responsible AI UK (RAI UK) programme for the first three years. This new programme will allow the role holder to collaborate with teams of researchers and academics across top universities in the UK. The role holder, having recently completed or soon be completing their PhD, will have the potential to grow an international reputation in their field.
The role holder will receive the necessary support to establish themselves as an independent academic, whilst developing and maintaining a successful research portfolio. Initially, this post will enable the employee to focus on contributing to and advancing RAI UK’s interdisciplinary research agenda, with a reduced and managed teaching workload for three years. The role holder will gradually transition to a standard Assistant Professor role in the School of Computer Science. There will be opportunities to develop experience in leadership, management, and co-ordination of initiatives.
A PhD in computing is not required, but the candidate must be able to contribute to teaching within the School’s core computer science curriculum. The role holder is likely to have research experience in areas relevant to Responsible and Trustworthy AI, including but not limited to Responsible Innovation, Human-Computer/Robot Interaction, Fairness, Accountability and Transparency, Diversity & Inclusion, Explainable AI, Technology Law & Regulation, Psychology, Sociology, Digital Humanities and Science and Technology Studies.
The role holder will work with interdisciplinary researchers in Horizon Digital Economy Research and the Mixed Reality Lab, and will have access to work with robots in the Cobot Maker Space (https://cobotmakerspace.org).
The role holder will have initial experience in developing and securing research grant income, and have an established national and growing international reputation in their field, with a proven track record of publishing peer reviewed research. The role holder will have a strong interest in student teaching and learning, excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to build relationships and collaborate with others, and some experience in managing and motivating others.
At the University of Nottingham, we are committed to providing competitive employment packages whilst supporting the well-being of our staff to help them reach their full potential. As a University employee, you will have access to a range of benefits and rewards, including leading fitness and health facilities, staff discounts and travel schemes, along with a generous holiday allowance and a highly attractive pension scheme.
The post is offered on a permanent contract. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week); however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 29 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. Job share arrangements may be considered.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Joel Fischer. Email: joel.fischer@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
Your application will be considered on an equal basis, subject to the relevant permission to work in the UK as set out by UK Visas & Immigration.
