A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on research in the fields of machine learning, hydrology, and water resources management at various spatial scales, from river basin to global. 

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are: 

  • Explore alternative ML models for hydrological prediction, focusing on large river basins in Africa, Asia and South America  
  • Assemble and harmonize large sets of hydro-climatic data 
  • Contribute to research proposals and writing bids for research grants 
  • Write peer reviewed academic publications of the highest standards of significance and impact 
  • Supervise less experienced researchers and PhD students 
  • Develop skills and networks to become a successful independent researcher, including through grant writing, independent papers, consulting, trainings.  

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: 

  • PhD in Machine Learning, Climate Science, Statistics, Physics, Hydrology, or Information Engineering 
  • At least one first authored publication in a referred journal 
  • Strong record of productive and creative research, demonstrated by presentations at scientific conferences 
  • Experience in computer programming for machine learning 
  • Experience handling large hydro-climatic datasets 
  • Experience working at the interface of machine learning and environmental risks 
  • Experience in data engineering- curating and maintaining labelled training datasets for deep learning. 

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: 

Research Assistant: £29,605 - £33,966 

Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263 

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
