A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on Research Associate for Investigating Measurably Better ExperienceS (IMBUES) project 

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK. 

The key responsibilities and duties are:

  • Designing and developing an appropriate research methodology to address the research objective
  • Designing tests and experiments to address research objectives
  • Analysing results and write up results of tests and experiments
  • Compiling and analysing quantitative and qualitative data, prepare reports and present results to summarise main findings and conclusions
  • Presenting results of scientific research to research group, sponsors, conferences and publish academic articles outlining the methodology and results of research undertaken
  • Setting up, administering and running user trials and interviews
  • Analysing driving related tasks and activities on road, test track and driving simulator

The essential skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

  • Has obtained or is close to obtaining a PhD in a topic related to ergonomics, human factors, cognitive psychology, or relevant design discipline.
  • The role holder would possess some research experience with sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques
  • Experience of managing own workload
  • Has a current full UK driving licence

Desirable ones are: 

  • Technical design experience/capability
  • Appreciation of the role of Inclusive Design and the impact of ageing
  • User trial administration and interview experience/capability
  • Ability to design and develop an appropriate research methodology in order to address the research objective(s)
  • Ability to design tests and experiments to address the research objective(s)
  • Ability to analyse results and writes up results of tests and experiments
  • Ability to compile and analyse quantitative and qualitative data, prepares reports and present results to summarise main findings and conclusions
  • Ability to present results of scientific research to sponsors, addresses conferences and publishes articles outlining the methodology and results of research undertaken
  • Ability to characterise populations and segment, e.g. through personas and cluster analysis

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded 

Salary Ranges:

*Research Assistant: £29,605 - £33,966

*Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263 

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 June 2025 in the first instance.
