The Oxford-GSK Institute of Molecular & Computational Medicine has a new and exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher, specialising in Neuronal Dysfunction in Alzheimer’s Disease, to join the Institute.
The Institute is built around Fellows and Oxford-GSK project teams located across different departments within the Medical Sciences Division. Projects will initially focus on neurodegeneration and the central nervous system, specifically Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis but it is anticipated the range of activities will expand into other research areas in future.
Based within the group of Dr Hugo Fernandes at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, you will be responsible for designing, validating, troubleshooting, and performing relevant assays to interrogate dysregulation induced in iPS-neurons by exposure to material from Alzheimer’s brains. You will develop an iPS-neuronal-microglial co-culture screening platform that can assess synaptic function and synaptic loss, and keep meticulous, detailed records of your work and commit to engaging with cloud-based analyses on the IMCM data platform. Other duties will include collaborating with peer scientists from cross-functional teams to analyse and interpret large complex datasets and communicate findings, and promoting the Oxford-GSK IMCM locally and nationally and disseminating research outcomes to advance knowledge in the specialist area.
It is essential that you hold a PhD/DPhil (or close to completion) in biochemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience or a related field, and have experience in cell culture, preferably human pluripotent stem cells. You will have knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, and of differentiation of iPSCs into neuronal and glial cultures. Experience in molecular biology methodologies, following and adapting protocols and setting up cellular assays including image-based is essential for this role, and knowledge of neuroinflammation would be highly desirable.
