The Department of Humanities is a community of researchers, teachers, students, and support staff working together on cutting edge issues in contemporary culture. JMC was ranked 1st in the UK for Communication & Media Studies (The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024). Our research is internationally recognised and is concentrated around key themes in gender & media; science, health & environment; politics, publics & activism; and violence & conflict.

We seek to appoint a Teaching Associate to join our JMC subject team, on a 0.5 FTE, fixed-term maternity cover contract, with relevant practitioner and teaching experience, to deliver journalism practice-based modules across the curriculum.

We welcome applicants with specialisms in any area of practice based media and communication, but are particularly keen to attract applicants who can contribute to the breadth of practice based teaching including core modules in news and features, news reporting and writing and options in digital storytelling skills, multimedia journalism, digital portfolio, media and sport and who can supervise practice based UG and PG dissertations.

The role involves delivering a range of established teaching modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with guidance as required, in a manner that supports a research-informed and practical approach to student learning; undertaking student assessment and examination activities, including the provision of appropriate feedback to students; supervision of students as required, providing direction, support and guidance and contributing to curriculum development activities.

To be considered for this role it is essential you have a relevant good honours degree and PhD (or equivalent professional experience), have a demonstrable practitioner and teaching experience. You will have the ability to plan and organise your own workload effectively, work in a team environment and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences. Experience of curriculum development and student supervision would be advantageous.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Professor Lesley Henderson, Subject Leader at Lesley.Henderson@strath.ac.uk. Please note the university will be closed on Friday 18 April and Monday 21 April for local public holidays.
