About us
UCL is one of the UK’s leading universities, a world-class multidisciplinary research and teaching institution, whose staff and former students have included at least 30 Nobel laureates and 2 winners of the Fields medal. Founded in 1826, UCL was the first university in England to admit students regardless of race, religion or gender. UCL is a world leading, global university with a community of more than 50,000 students from 150 countries and over 16,000 staff which pursues academic excellence, breaks boundaries, and makes a positive impact on real world problems.
UCL Translational Research Office (TRO) is an integral part of I&E and UCL’s biomedical research powerhouse. As an expert team of applied scientists and business developers, we support our researchers in realising their translational ambition by offering strategic advice, funding support, and bridging the gap with industry to help establish collaborations that drive the pipeline of therapeutic, device and diagnostic innovations.
The TRO Business & Innovation Group is leading the implementation of a comprehensive approach intended to produce a step change in UCL’s ability to develop new approaches to diagnosis and treatment of disease. To achieve this, the group works with the health community across UCL and externally and has an important role at the interface between academia and industry, liaising with multiple senior partner representatives with the aim of moving industry relationships beyond transactional fee for service models to true partnering.
About the role
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual with excellent interpersonal skills to manage a diverse set of relationships. Working with senior personnel from academia, the Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) and commercial partners, the individual will bring innovative approaches to identifying and defining high-value opportunities. This is a fixed-term contract role to cover maternity leave to 31st May 2026.
The Senior Business and Innovation Manager will deliver UCL LMS’s strategic thinking and tailored approaches for industrial engagement that enhance and raise the profile of biomedical translational science at UCL, its Academic Health Science Centres (AHSC) and three BRC partners, such that they are recognised as the world’s best at translation.
The successful candidate will work to benefit the faculty’s strategic objectives and strengths, including the execution of the industry engagement strategy across the Therapeutic Innovation Networks (TINs), which bring together researchers and industry experts involved across key therapeutic modalities. They will engage with industry for the purposes of knowledge transfer and collaborative research opportunities relevant to the commercial and/or strategic development of such organisations.
In addition to driving the research agendas, the engagement will yield appropriate returns to the individual departments in terms of increased revenue and contributions in kind, including equipment and secondment of staff.
