About the role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for a Geotechnics Technology and Laboratory Manager to lead on technical support for the delivery of the research and teaching mission of the Section and Department.
The Geotechnics Section provides mechanical and electro-mechanical services associated with the running and maintenance of equipment and testing apparatus in geotechnical research and teaching. The post holder will manage the technical support in the Section and develop the facility to support growth and development in the area.
The technical team supports a range of research activities for academic and research staff, and PhD students, as well as laboratory teaching for MSc and undergraduate students. The post holder will be based in the Department’s Geotechnical Engineering laboratories and may also support work in our other laboratory areas.
This is a full time, permanent post.
What you would be doing:
You will manage the Geotechnics laboratories, ensuring alignment with departmental strategies and safety regulations, including equipment use, health and safety compliance, laboratory inductions, risk assessments, and acting as the Safety Representative.
You will also manage and organise technical support within the Geotechnical laboratories, including allocating tasks, ensuring standards, supporting fieldwork, leading technical staff recruitment and development, collaborating with academic staff, advising on technical services, and assisting with result interpretation.
Managing the physical infrastructure of the Geotechnics laboratory is another key responsibility, including training staff and students, maintaining equipment and consumables, advising on resource needs, ensuring security, developing policies, collaborating on equipment design, maintaining documentation, and overseeing equipment maintenance and training.
