Applications are invited for Teaching Associate to support Professor Emma Mawdsley in research, writing and teaching around 'Geographies of Hope'. The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Geography.
Professor Mawdsley has developed a third-year undergraduate course, 'Geographies of Hope', which launched in 2023. It was supported by a Ray Y Gildea Jnr award from the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers; and in its first year it won a University wide student-Ied teaching award for innovative teaching. The course aims to engage critically and constructively with ideas of 'hope' in Geography. It examines various ways in which 'progressive change' has been achieved, at different scales, in different places, and in different ways, all animated by different ideas. It recognises that different actors (and participants in the course) will have varying ideas of what might constitute 'progress', and unpack that critically.
The course is deliberately wide-ranging in the issues and means/methods of achieving change. The course isn't about providing 'answers'; rather, the aim is to contribute to faculty and student understanding of positive change, with the hope that everyone will find more empowering possibilities to take forward.
The successful applicant will help organise the course; contribute undergraduate lectures, and lead small group teaching, and associated aspects of this course, including innovative assessment and marking. The successful applicant will also contribute to other parts of the Tripos and Masters programmes where relevant.
The second element of the post is to co-develop with Professor Mawdsley a teaching resource ¿ most likely a text book, but possibly with web-based elements ¿ for undergraduate teaching on this subject in the UK and beyond. The third element is to co-research and co-author articles for journal publications on hopeful geographies.
The post is therefore a blend of teaching and pedagogy-oriented writing and research.
Eligible candidates should have a PhD (or relevant experience) in human geography or a cognate subject. They may or may not have worked on 'hope' directly, but they will be able to show how their research, teaching and/or personal and professional interests engage with 'hopeful' geographies. Applicants must be highly motivated and should have excellent time management, organisational and communication skills, and be able to bring ideas and energy to this role. The ability to write engagingly and with clarity is essential.
