The aim of this study is to examine the stratigraphic, structural, sedimentological and reservoir development of the North Atlantic rifted seaway during the late Lower to Middle Jurassic interval (Late Toarcian-Early Bathonian). The Hebrides Rift system of NW Scotland is a well exposed along strike age and facies equivalent of the Atlantic margin rift system of the Mid Norwegian Continental Margin from which to directly compare to the Late Toarcian – Early Bathonian reservoir successions of Mid-Norway. The Hebridean successions document a remarkably comparable sequence stratigraphic development to Mid-Norway, containing distinctive biostratigraphically constrained flooding and regressive events and surfaces that allow direct comparison between the two areas. In addition, the sedimentary systems of both areas were deposited in subtle to increasingly active “rift initiation” faulted topography subject to strong wave and tidal influence with both lateral and axial sediment supply.
The study will provide a review of the timing and nature of Jurassic sequence development and structural evolution of the Mid Norway region within the regional context of Atlantic margin rifted seaway development. The aim is to develop predictive tectono-stratigraphic models for reservoir presence and quality, in addition to determining seal/baffle distribution of and potential secondary source intervals.
To undertake this work two, three-year postdoctoral positions are available, this post will focus on the structural development. The PDRA’s will join a vibrant subsurface research community in the School of Geosciences at the University of Aberdeen, which is well respected for its contribution to furthering the geological understanding of the NW European Margin.
Salary will be at Grade 6, £38,249 per annum.
