Salary: £48,056 to £56,345 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 26th March 2025

About the role:

Applications are encouraged for a Research Associate position to work on the project: Closing the gap in Upper Ocean mixing using surface waves. The research conducted within this project will provide new physical insights in turbulent mixing in the thermocline induced by surface waves using laboratory experiments.

This project strives to investigate: (a) the wind-wave interactions and capture their influence on thermocline mixing and (b) the coupling of physical mixing processes with environmental variables, improving understanding of upper ocean dynamics. By determining how energy from wind-induced currents and wave-induced motions contributes to turbulent kinetic energy and mixing at the thermocline, this research seeks to improve predictive models for ocean mixing, with implications for climate studies and environmental engineering applications.

What you would be doing:

You will design and carry out experimental investigations in the Hydrodynamics Laboratory at the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering. (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/fluid-mechanics/hydrodynamics-laboratory/).

You will work under the direction of Dr Ioannis Karmpadakis and Dr Costanza Rodda to carry out data analysis and design and implement physical model testing. You will also be required to write reports for submission to research sponsors, and to present findings to colleagues and at conferences. You will also work to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding.

What we are looking for:

  • Hold a PhD in Fluid Mechanics, Civil or Mechanical Engineering, Experimental Physics or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
  • Experience in experimental methods for Fluid Mechanics
  • Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people
  • Ability to organise own work with minimal supervision

What we can offer you:

  • Professional development opportunities, including publishing in leading journals, presenting at international conferences, and shaping industry standards in sustainability and resilience.
  • Access to a sector-leading salary and benefits package, extensive training programs, and career development resources to support your professional goals.
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 38 days off a year)
