Duties of the Role
Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor and a member of the University's executive team (University Steering Group), the Executive Dean (Science and Health) plays a central role in the delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan. They provide academic leadership for the faculty and have responsibility for it’s financial and wider resource management. They line manage a number of key academic roles at the faculty level, as well as the heads of the schools and departments in the faculty. They are directly supported in this by a faculty support team led by a Faculty Manager, and by relevant colleagues in professional support services.
A successful external applicant for this role will also be appointed to a substantive Chair (Professorship) in one of our academic departments, to which you will revert at the conclusion of your term of office as Executive Dean. The normal term of appointment to the role of the Executive Dean (Science and Health) is three years, with eligibility for re-appointment for a further three years. You may exceptionally be re-appointed for a further period of up to three years making a total of nine years. Upon return to your home department, you will undertake the full remit of academic duties including education, research, and leadership/citizenship. We recognise that in a research-intensive university, research credibility is essential and a percentage of your time as Executive Dean will be ring-fenced for you to maintain your research during this period.
Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in a discipline relevant to the University and have a distinguished academic record, including an internationally excellent research standing. A proven track record of successful academic leadership at a senior level in a higher education institution that includes a broad range of disciplines together with excellent planning skills, allied to well-developed analytical and problem solving skills are also essential. The applicant will need to publish in an area relevant to one of our Units of Assessment in future REF submissions.
The University of Essex is a campus based University and all academic appointments are made with the expectation that you will be present on campus to fulfil the requirements of your position. At the time of a job offer, the possibility of hybrid working, will be discussed and considered on an individual basis, but you will be required to be based within the UK.
For this post, we would expect the role holder to be demonstrating visible on-campus leadership of the faculty, although some working from home may be possible, especially in relation to time set aside for the role holder to undertake their research.
