Salary: £35,116 to £45,413
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 25th March 2025
Closes: 9th April 2025
Job Ref: RY45489

The Clinical School Computing Service (CSCS) is looking for 2 articulate, self-motivated and proactive individuals to join the IT Infrastructure/Server Team.  The successful applicants will be joining a team of 10 staff who design, implement and maintain enterprise grade IT systems (i.e. servers, storage and network) which underpin the services used by medical/biological research scientists on the University's biomedical campus.

The successful candidates will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the IT systems that support advanced scientific research across multiple disciplines. This will involve 2nd line support and troubleshooting of specialist desktops to include Linux desktops as well as Windows desktops which are running specialist scientific software or are connected to scientific instruments. The role holders will work closely with researchers, facilities managers, and external vendors to ensure that computing environments remain reliable, secure and fit for purpose.

We are looking for candidates who are experienced in managing either Windows or Linux operating systems or both; training in the other technology will be provided for candidates who only have experience in one. Experience in scientific/research environments is desirable.  However, for all 2 posts the following skills and experience are essential:

  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting domain-bound desktops.
  • Managing and troubleshooting domain client networking, including authentication, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy and Linux homes.
  • Familiarity with IT service management tools and ticketing systems.
  • Experience with scripting or automation for system administration tasks.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity best practices in research computing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Able to work autonomously and as part of a team.

We provide excellent opportunities for career development, 41 days annual leave (including public holidays), a generous pension scheme and a wide range of competitive benefits and services. Our staff also have access to internal University training, several online learning platforms as well as an allowance for external training courses.

Informal enquiries about the post may be directed to Philippa Hewett at cscs.recruitment@medsch.cam.ac.uk

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
