Director of the Downing Battcock Institute

University of Cambridge - Downing College

Location: Cambridge
Salary: University Professorship Grade 12
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 16th April 2025
Closes: 16th May 2025

The Downing Battcock Institute is an exciting initiative based at Downing College in the University of Cambridge. As a brand new institute, it seeks to galvanise policy research, discussion, implementation, and training on various themes to address some of the biggest threats faced by society. On account of a generous donation from alumnus and philanthropist, Humphrey Battcock, the College now seeks to attract exceptional candidates to be its inaugural director.

The vision behind the Institute is bold and exhilarating. It will be a bridge between the College and the University to connect with policymakers and those who implement policy in the UK and internationally, by facilitating discussions, meetings, conferences and research projects.

Within three years, it will be integral to Cambridge, with academics at Downing and across the University collaborating on policy-related research and training with a variety of external stakeholders. Furthermore, through the work of the Director, visiting fellows and high-profile conferences and events, the Institute will be widely known outside the University for the quality of its work and its ability to convene those working in the front-line of policy research and implementation.

Downing College seeks candidates with the vision, leadership experience and enthusiasm to develop the Institute into a leading presence. They should have evidence of research engagement, a keen knowledge of policy, personal external networks and experience of attracting funding. Whilst a PhD or comparable postgraduate qualification is desirable, it is not a requirement.

The Director of the Institute will be expected to make a fulsome contribution to the academic community at Downing College by becoming a fellow of the College with its associated responsibilities, including becoming a trustee as a member of the Governing Body. The person appointed to this post might already be associated with a university faculty or department in a related subject, in which case the creation of this directorship presents an opportunity to buy-out 40% of their time. Otherwise, it is a part time, 40% FTE.
