The role

We are seeking a motivated interdisciplinary researcher to join the University of Bristol, as part of the Airbus led Aerospace Technology Institute / IUK funded AVIATION1 project. The research will investigate innovative passive vibration control methods for lightweight structures located on the wings of the next generation fixed-wing aircraft. The main aim of the research is to propose and mature efficient damping solutions realisable under broad range of design constraints and complex operational conditions.

As part of the role, it would be expected that the candidate works closely with Airbus and other partners in the AVIATION1 project, making regular presentations, writing progress reports, completing project deliverables and disseminating findings through conference and journal publications. The successful candidate will become a member of active and widely recognised Dynamics and Control Research Group with access to state-of-the-art research facilities.

What will you be doing?

  • To determine the benchmark for a lightweight wing component and develop the low order mathematical model of the studied problem in representative working environment.
  • To critically assess current progress in passive vibration control methods with emphasis on compact distributed strategies compatible with the benchmark’s constraints.
  • To conceptually model, analyse and characterise selected passive vibration control methods under practical design limitations.
  • To apply methods of multi-objective optimal design to the selected candidate passive vibration control solution for performance assessment and demonstrator design.
  • Undertake technical discussions with other partners in AVIATION1 and researchers across the University of Bristol.
  • Produce written technical reports to meet the required deliverables of AVIATION1 and also publish conference and journal papers arising from this work as appropriate.
  • Present results from this work at regular progress meetings. Coordinating progress meetings relating to this work with Airbus and other interested parties.

You should apply if

  • A 1st class degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
  • Advanced knowledge of mathematical modelling of vibrating aerospace structures
  • Significant experience of passive vibration control methods and their modelling
  • Significant experience of methods of multi-objective performance evaluation under constraints
  • Experience in the dynamic data analysis and interpretation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proactive self-starter able to define & produce new processes & procedures
  • Inquisitive nature with an interest & skills in problem-solving
