About the role

The Archives Digitisation Assistant (Knossos) will work on the digitisation of the Sir Arthur Evans Archive. This is the primary excavation archive for Sir Arthur Evan’s work at Knossos, consisting of around 10,000 individual items including notebooks, letters, photographs, drawings and plans. Working under the supervision of the Sir Arthur Evans Curator of Bronze Age and Classical Greece as part of the Ashmolean’s Antiquities department, as part of the wider digitisation programme run by the Digital Collections department, you will create digital collection records for this important collection to meet museum data standards for publication online. You will also assist with making the excavation archive more widely available, through the Ashmolean’s website and other digital outputs.

Working primarily from existing catalogues, you will create records for the Archive, down to item level as appropriate, using the Museum’s Collections Management System (MuseumPlus). You will also assist with the creation of new digital assets and ensure that they are entered correctly in the Ashmolean’s Digital Assets Management System with appropriate metadata.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position, covering the maternity leave of the substantive postholder until 30 January 2026. This post will be based on site at least 3 days per week with some remote working possible.

About You

You will have experience of digitising archival records to ISAD(G) standards and relevant experience in digital collections management (Collection Management/Digital Asset Management systems). You will also have excellent IT and data skills, including data entry, cleaning and processing. You will have good communication skills and high standard of spoken and written English, with a degree in an archaeological or historical subject. A demonstrable interest in Aegean Bronze Age archaeology and experience of work in a museum or similar environment is desirable.

How to apply

You will be required to upload your CV and a supporting evidence form using the attached template as part of your online application. Your supporting evidence form should list each of the essential and desirable selection criteria, as listed in the job description, and explain how you meet each one. Both documents must be submitted to be considered.

* An automatic annual increment each year will be paid up to (and not including) the discretionary range within the University of Oxford’s Grade 4 salary scale.
