Full time permanent post – 36.5hours/week

This role involves supporting the safe and efficient operation of the Engineering Build Space (EBS) in collaboration with the Facilities Manager and Process and Production Specialist(s).

You will ensure adherence to health and safety, compliance, and statutory requirements, while implementing safe systems of work. Additionally, you will work closely with academic staff and stakeholders to provide technical expertise for seminars, workshops, and projects across various degree programmes.

You will assist with the design, development, and setup of teaching and research equipment, offering advice on feasibility, technical issues, and providing practical solutions. You'll help manage access to the EBS, ensure proper equipment maintenance, and support researchers and academics with design and technical queries.

The role also includes providing technical advice on manufacturing processes, supervising and training students and staff on equipment use, and supporting public events and activities in the EBS. Additionally, you will manage inventory, monitor resources, and contribute to process documentation. In the absence of the Facilities Manager and Process and Production Specialist(s), you will deputise and ensure smooth operations.

Due to the nature of the facility the standard working hours for this role are:

09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Thursday

09:00 to 16:00 Friday

This includes a half hour lunch break. As teaching activities can be timetabled until 19:00 on any weekday, availability up to this time may occasionally be required. Weekend and evening work will be required on occasion to support the activities of the facility, additional hours worked will be compensated through overtime or TOIL.

About You

You will have a relevant vocational qualification at NVQ level 4, HNC/HND, or a degree in a related subject, or equivalent work experience in a similar technical role.

With experience in a technical or research facility, you bring strong expertise in design, design for manufacture (DfAM), CNC machining, and additive manufacturing technologies, including FDM/FFF. You are proficient in manual tools, machine tools, and CNC/AM toolpath generation.

Your skills include advanced CAD design, particularly with Autodesk Fusion, and a deep understanding of materials such as metals, polymers, wood, and composites. You can work independently and manage multiple projects, with excellent prioritisation and decision-making skills to meet deadlines.

With strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, you’re adept at collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. You are quick to apply new knowledge and flexible in adapting to emerging technologies.

Your attention to detail and ability to work with professional diagrams and technical specifications ensure you can implement precise solutions and draft Standard Operating Procedures.

In addition, you have IT literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and specialist software, with experience in website management and development.

For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the  job description.
