The role

We are inviting applications for either Devon or Cornwall, but if you might be interested in either, or are able to be flexible, please mention this in your application and at interview.

Please state in your application what sessions in the working week would you be readily available to teach and whether there could be any flexibility on this.

The groups take place as follows:

  • Year 3 on Monday / Year 2 on Tuesday / Year 5 on Wednesday / Year 1 on Thursday / Year 4 on Friday. Year 1 groups are only available in Exeter. The sessions are usually timetabled to be regularly in a morning or an afternoon through the year. It may be possible to swap to a different year group at the end of the academic year.
  • Twelve group sessions are scheduled for each group in the academic year, and then students usually have two or 3 one to one meetings with their tutor over the year to discuss their progress and specific needs.
  • Each group requires a 90-hour annual commitment. This includes one to one meetings with students, reviewing eportfolio written reflections, training and PDP, and preparation time.
  • The successful applicants can choose to be the tutor for 1 or 2 groups depending on timetabling and availability.

Professional Development Groups aim to develop the personal and professional skills essential for being a doctor. Student experiences from placements are used as a starting point to develop reflective practice. Group discussions and individual learning activities explore complexity, ethics and professionalism and relate these to learning on the rest of the course. You will also act as a personal tutor for the academic year, monitoring students’ individual academic progress, providing guidance and advice, discussing academic progress, providing feedback and referring to sources of additional support as necessary.
