A Senior Lecturer in Critical Minerals is sought to support both research and teaching in the Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of Manchester.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Science at University of Manchester has an international reputation for research in Earth, Planetary and Environmental Sciences, especially in crustal and deep mantle processes, geomechanics, fluid-rock reactions, sedimentary basins and resource exploration, bioprocessing and the synthesis of biominerals, and the exploitation, remediation and recycling of resources. We consistently deliver internationally leading research, impact and teaching, with a strong focus on applied geoscience research. Critical minerals are the building blocks for transition to a low-carbon and digitized economy. They are essential for renewable energy and clean technology applications as well as for advanced manufacturing supply chains, including defence and security technologies, consumer electronics, agriculture, medical applications and critical infrastructure. We seek a new appointment to develop our expertise in the area of critical mineral ore systems.

The Department offers unrivalled facilities for the geochemical and petrophysical analysis of rocks and minerals within the Manchester Analytical Geochemistry Unit and Mineral Analysis Facility, as well as a high-PT experimental petrology lab, a rock deformation lab, a biomineral synthesis lab, workstation capacity for geophysical data interpretation, 2D multi-scale petrographical imaging, as well as world-class University of Manchester facilities in Research Computing and 3D-4D X-ray CT imaging facilities hosted in the Henry Royce Institute for advanced materials, and strong collaborations with Diamond Light Source, the UK synchrotron, for X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray CT.

In addition to joining this vibrant research landscape, the new appointee will support teaching delivery in the field and classroom on our successful undergraduate and masters programmes in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Sustainable Geoscience and Energy, and Pollution and Environmental Control, as well as cross-faculty teaching with the Department of Materials in the area of critical metals. The post holder will also bring their personal research to students through supervision of individual or group projects across the spectrum from undergraduate to postgraduate research students.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting diversity in careers in the STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education. The School (as it was in 2016) received a Silver Athena SWAN Award for its commitment to diversity in the workplace, and the School of Natural Sciences to which the Department now belongs was also recently awarded Athena SWAN Silver. We welcome applications from all sections of the community especially those historically underrepresented in academia and appointment will be made on merit
