BACKGROUND

The University of Manchester’s Faculty of Science and Engineering is at the forefront of energy systems research. This position is part of the EPSRC-funded HI-ACT (Hydrogen Integration for Accelerated Energy Transitions) project, which aims to support the UK's net-zero goals through hydrogen integration in whole energy systems. The successful candidate will join Professor Aoife Foley's AVANTERN Group (Advancement in the Net-zero Transition through Engineering and Research for Networks), which focuses on pioneering research in network infrastructure, energy resilience, and engineering solutions to drive the net-zero transition. Professor Foley, Chair in Net Zero Infrastructure, leads the AVANTERN Group and plays a key role in the HI-ACT national consortium, addressing technical, social, and economic challenges related to hydrogen integration.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Research Associate will conduct cutting-edge research in whole energy systems with a focus on hydrogen and alternative liquid fuels (HALF). Key responsibilities include developing modelling tools, supporting technology roadmaps, and contributing to policy analysis within HI-ACT’s cross-cutting themes of equity, diversity, and early career researcher (ECR) engagement. As part of the AVANTERN Group, the Research Associate will also contribute to broader research on energy networks and system resilience, applying advanced methodologies to accelerate progress toward net-zero infrastructure.
