Location: Sussex, Falmer
Salary: £38,249 to £45,413 per annum, pro rata if part time, Grade 7
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 4th March 2025

About the role

The Quantum Systems and Devices Group is looking to recruit a highly motivated and skilled research fellow, familiar with quantum sensing technologies and atomic physics of ultracold neutral atomic systems, to develop a magnetic microscope. This novel instrument is based on an atomic probe where ultracold atoms are magnetically trapped using a printed circuit board or atom chip. The microscope will measure magnetic field distributions at picotesla level and provide maps of nanoampere currents running in two dimensional samples. The research fellow will be an essential part of the team to develop and characterise the microscope and measure samples of scientific and industrial interest.

About you

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in experimental physics. They will have a solid background in atomic physics, atom-light interactions, quantum technologies, and, ideally, familiarity with quantum gases. They will show evidence of engagement in high-quality research activity, have excellent communication and organisational skills, be able to set priorities and meet deadlines, and be capable to work independently – on own initiative, without close supervision – and as a team player supporting other colleagues.
