Role Description

York Law School

York Law School is seeking to appoint a lecturer in law on the teaching and scholarship track to contribute to the design of a new LLM programme which is designed to prepare students for the SQE. We are looking for applications from persons with a strong track record of innovative design of materials and curricular content, to develop materials for the Criminal Law and Practice element of the SQE, including the SQE2 skills. The ability to develop a practice-focused option module on the programme would also be welcomed.

You will join and contribute to a distinctive student-focused learning and teaching environment, and be part of creating an innovative new approach to SQE preparation. As the only Law School in the UK to base our degrees on problem-based learning (PBL), we offer a distinctive and dynamic approach to teaching and learning. Our undergraduate degree teaches the foundation subjects of legal knowledge through PBL in an integrated set of modules in years 1 and 2. We host the Baroness Hale Law Clinic, which provides a base not only for teaching but also for ethnographic and socially aware research into law. You will be part of a friendly, collegial, and close-knit community of teachers and researchers, and will benefit from a high degree of support from colleagues at all levels.

Role

  • To design and develop innovative and engaging teaching and learning activities and materials in the area of Criminal Law and Practice for a new LLM (SQE).
  • To lecture, lead seminars, problem-based learning, tutorials and other forms of graduate and postgraduate teaching on the LLM(SQE)
  • To develop teaching and learning activities on other degree programmes in the School to all levels, through lectures, tutorials, problem-based learning, seminars, and clinical (in the YLS Clinic) which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students
  • To carry out on-going curriculum review, including teaching content and materials and contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Degree in law or equivalent professional experience
  • Extensive knowledge in criminal law and practice, to design & develop SQE-focused teaching and learning material and activities, and provide learning support across different levels of academic activity
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Ability to innovate in teaching and learning, e.g. through the design and development of teaching materials across a range of modules, including criminal law and practice
  • Experience in teaching and learning in HE at undergraduate or postgraduate level or in an evidenced similar context
  • An ability to undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities
  • A collaborative ethos
