Research Associate in Analytical Chemistry

The role

The School of Chemistry is seeking to appoint a part-time (0.4 to 0.5 FTE) pathway 2 Research Associate in Analytical Chemistry. The appointment starts as soon as possible and will end on 30/12/2026. The role holder will join a multidisciplinary group of researchers working on a ERC-funded  project entitled “SUSTAIN – Sustainability of Agriculture in Neolithic Europe ”, led by Dr Maria Ivanova (University of Vienna) with Dr Melanie Roffet-Salque at the University of Bristol. The postholder will be part of the Organic Geochemistry Unit within the School of Chemistry.

What will you be doing?

You will be responsible for the interpretation of lipid residue data obtained from archaeological pottery. You will be acquiring compound-specific ¹⁴C dates from archaeological lipid extracts at the Bristol Research AMS facility. You will be producing reports and manuscripts in readiness for publication.

You should apply if

You should have:

• A good honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Archaeology or related subject
• PhD (awarded or imminent) in Analytical Chemistry or Archaeological Chemistry or equivalent professional qualification/experience or be working towards one.
• High level analytical chemistry skills and the ability pro-actively and creatively to implement wet and instrumental solutions to complex problems in environmental chemistry.
• Relevant experience in compound-specific ¹⁴C dating and archaeology.
• Ability to publish scientific manuscripts, data reports and summaries.
• Experience of liaison with external collaborators and organisations

Additional information

Contract type: Open ended with fixed funding until 30/12/2026

Work pattern: 14 hours or 17.5 hours per week
