About the role

The project involves a series of studies in structural mechanics as it pertains to the design of novel structural systems for infrastructure. Research in the areas of origami structures, metamaterials and complex infrastructure such as novel bridge designs, wind blades will be explored, in particular in regards to dynamic behaviour such as energy absorption during impact. The research work implies the translation of cutting edge technical knowledge into design methodologies, thus the methods will be tested through active participation in delivering teaching in relevant MSc and MEng modules. Implementation of this novel approaches requires their iterative introduction into higher education, thus approximately 20% of the researcher’s time will be spent in the classroom or in field trip implementation of these new design methods.

The Research Fellow will:

  • Develop Structural Risk Assessment protocols for unique and complex infrastructure
  • Conduct detailed and critical literature surveys that identify the available knowledge around these specific problems
  • Invest time in scholarship, professional development and research to underpin research-based education in areas that span architecture and engineering and overlap with fire safe design. This includes awareness of ARB/RIBA/CIBSE/JBM criteria for Accredited Architectural & Engineering Education
  • Prepare classes and teaching materials, set and mark assignments and relevant administration (record keeping, student feedback etc.)
