Driving Innovation in Biofilm Standards and Regulations

The National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) at the University of Southampton is seeking a proactive and driven Biofilm Alliance Enterprise Fellow to support the delivery of the Innovate UK-funded Biofilm Alliance project. This is an exciting opportunity to lead research-driven initiatives, engage with key stakeholders, and contribute to the regulatory landscape shaping biofilm management in industry.

About the Role

In this role, you will be integral to the Biofilm Alliance project team, where your primary responsibility will involve conducting comprehensive gap analyses of biofilm standards and regulations, particularly within the food sector. You will carry out desk-based research, which will include literature reviews, surveys, and consultations with regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders, to identify regulatory requirements and opportunities. The synthesis of this research into high-quality publications, such as reports, white papers, and protocols, will be a key aspect of the position, ensuring that findings are effectively disseminated to inform policy and industry practices.

You will play a central role in developing and managing strategic partnerships with various stakeholders, including industry leaders, academic institutions, regulatory authorities, and metrology organisations. Your efforts will help foster collaboration and innovation across the Biofilm Alliance network. This position will also involve supporting the organisation of events, such as conferences and workshops, to promote engagement and innovation in biofilm regulations, where you will represent the NBIC and the Biofilm Alliance. Your participation in these activities will be essential for raising awareness, facilitating discussions, & influencing the regulatory landscape for biofilms.

The expected start-date of the role is 1 April 2025.

About you

The ideal candidate will have a PhD or equivalent experience in microbiology, biofilm research, food science, regulatory science, or a related discipline. You should have experience in conducting research, synthesising complex information, and communicating your findings effectively through written and verbal channels. A track record of stakeholder engagement and partnership development is essential, as you will be expected to build and maintain relationships with key industry and regulatory partners. Your organisational and project management skills will enable you to plan, coordinate, & deliver multiple concurrent workstreams, ensuring that deadlines and quality standards are consistently met.

What we offer

In this position, you will benefit from a friendly, supportive and inclusive environment that values work-life balance. You will become a member of the Operational Team of NBIC. The University of Southampton offers flexible and hybrid-working arrangements, alongside a generous holiday allowance & additional university closure days. You will also have access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) pension, subsidised health and fitness facilities, and various staff discounts.

At the NBIC and the University of Southampton, we are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from all candidates, particularly those from Black, Asian, & Minority Ethnic communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, & people with disabilities, as we strive to create a diverse and representative environment.

If you would like to discuss this position, please get in touch with Dr Paulina Rakowska (paulinar@biofilms.ac.uk), Lead of the Biofilm Standards and Regulations at the NBIC.

Please apply by uploading your CV and a cover letter detailing how your skills and experience match the requirements of the role.
