We are seeking an applicant for a fully-funded ERC Research Assistant position with the opportunity to undertake PhD studies in statistical methodology and theory led by Professor Richard Samworth in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.
This position is advertised in connection with the PI's ERC Advanced Grant on 'Robust statistical methodology and theory for large-scale data'. It is motivated by the recognition that modern data generating mechanisms can be highly complex, and it is often challenging to write down a plausible generative statistical model. We should therefore seek statistical procedures that are robust. Examples of departures of interest from stylised models include missing and corrupted data, and problems in transfer learning. Novel, robust methodology is needed, supported by theory that allows for departures from restrictive assumptions. A specific project will be determined in consultation with the PI, considering the skills and interests of the successful applicant.
Duties include undertaking your own program of research and assisting with ongoing research programmes; writing up results for publication; and presenting your work to colleagues at conferences or seminars, both internally and externally. You may also be asked to assist in organizing various seminars and study groups. During the period of funding for this role, you will be eligible to complete your PhD studies.
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in mathematics, statistics or closely-related discipline by the start date of the position, and should have relevant background knowledge in statistical methodology and theory.
Informal inquiries can be made by contacting Professor Richard Samworth at rjs57@cam.ac.uk
