The University of Cambridge is excited to announce an opportunity for a driven and enthusiastic Veterinary Surgeon to join our small, friendly vet team. This role within University Biomedical Services (UBS) provides an internal traineeship programme to gain the knowledge and experience required to become a Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS).
Working alongside the NVSs you will provide a comprehensive veterinary service such as technical advice and clinical care and to the wide range of animal species housed within University biomedical research facilities. You will also support the Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body (AWERB) process providing advice to licensees in regard to animal health and welfare matters and ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory standards.
You will also support the NVSs with effective delivery and management of programmes for health surveillance and disease control and analysing health surveillance data for animal imports and exports. Additionally, the role involves delivery of training alongside the UBS Training Centre particularly relating to surgery and anaesthesia.
You will be a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) with experience working in a clinical veterinary position, and an excellent communicator with people across all levels and roles via a variety of communication methods. You will be self-motivated with strong time management skills while also working well as part of a team.
Knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, and other relevant legislation pertaining to the holding, import transport and export of experimental animals, health surveillance and disease control are desirable. Understanding and experience of the species used and types of work conducted within the University would also be an advantage.
Applicants must have their own method of transport in order to travel between biomedical facility sites and respond to out of hours emergency call outs, covering approximately one weekend in four once trained. Any out of hours work will be compensated.
Fixed Term: The role is available immediately, for a fixed period of two years as part of a traineeship to provide the training and experience necessary to become a full NVS.
Once appointed, you shall take on the duties and responsibilities of a Veterinary Surgeon, whilst undertaking an agreed Training Plan, approximately 12 months in duration, to gain the necessary training and expertise required to receive NVS accreditation. Once achieved you shall be promoted to the NVS role (salary £46,485 - £58,596), undertaking the full duties and responsibilities of and NVS for the remainder of the contract.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment and a security check.
