This is an exciting opportunity to be a key influencer within the People & Culture Department of a world leading university and play a pivotal role in the strategic development and continued transformation of our employee relations framework.

As Head of Employee Relations at University of the Arts London (UAL), you will have strategic responsibility for overseeing all employee relations and employment tribunal matters and will ensure that the people policy framework aligns with best practice and employment law.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and delivering an employee relations plan with a focus on developing a positive employee relations climate
  • Modernising, streamlining and aligning employee relations policies and processes to the organisational strategy and people plan
  • Oversight of all employee relations matters to ensure they are legally compliant and suitable for dealing with complex, sensitive and high-risk casework
  • Providing organisation wide expert employee relations advice
  • Strategically collaborating with People & Culture Business Partners to identify trends within business areas, determining root causes and identifying solutions
  • Organisational oversight and overview of all employment tribunals, working in partnership with Business Partners and the Legal team
  • Providing advice and counsel to senior leaders on sensitive employee relations matters, including supporting governor led dismissal appeals
  • Strategic projects, such as the resolution of employee relations casework and associated policy, supporting & upskilling of managers, and embedding equality, diversity and inclusion into employee relations practice

You will also participate in and co-lead with relevant Associate Directors of People & Culture joint organisational and policy meetings as required, including maintaining constructive and modern relationships with trade unions.

About you

Significant experience of managing complex, sensitive ER casework in a complex and unionised environment is essential.

You will need to be CIPD qualified (MCIPD/Level 7) or possess equivalent experience, in addition to knowledge of employment law and specifically the Equality Act 2010 and its application to the working environment.

Demonstrable experience of analysing data and producing action plans and a proven track record of managing employment tribunals with legal team support is also essential.

A proven track record of managing projects and experience of working in a matrix structure is equally important.
