The role


Accountable to the Board of Medical Studies, through the Office of the Director or Deputy Director of Medical Studies, to manage the development, delivery, and assessment of the Citizenship strand of the MBBS curriculum. This is a flagship initiative of the MBBS programme forming a core component of our curriculum aim of developing doctors as active "citizens" alongside their scholarly and practitioner skills. The programme is committed to developing students as active citizens- compassionate, humanitarian advocates who are committed to a lifetime of service and teamworking.

The Citizenship strand will consist of placements in community or other settings that enable students to develop core skills of being a doctor/ health professional. These opportunities will enable students to understand people and their social context more, work with others and build confidence. There are currently a number of volunteer opportunities for students. The postholder will build on these to develop a comprehensive programme of core placements for all students at identified places in the curriculum. The aim will be to develop our students while also as a medical school offering something back to our community. This may be through public health, education, outreach or other opportunities.

The Citizenship strand fits alongside other initiatives such as Learning Communities and Longitudinal Placements, the Patients as Educators Programme and the postholder will work very closely with the Clinical Leads for these components to build a coherent student development programme. A core element will be looking for opportunities for Interprofessional education.

You will work closely with the Year Leads, alongside primary and secondary care colleagues delivering the courses. The post is for four sessions to recognise the substantial nature of the role, and applications are welcome from clinicians from a variety of professional backgrounds and there will be opportunities to teach in their own areas of expertise. They will be directly accountable to Dr Richard Thomson, Sub Dean and work closely with a small team developing this new initiative.

Please be advised that the salary for this role will be as per that paid to the successful candidate in their NHS role (pro rata).
